Verse: It happened one morning in ’52, it’s a strange story, it’s sad but it’s true. I was out working some miles from home, my wife and our baby was at home and alone. The day was so smokey the sun was so red when I heard a rumble in the sky overhead. I first thought it thunder but then I could see it was a bushfire, Oh heaven help me. 2nd. Verse: I thought of my loved ones I’d left way back home, I thought of the danger and if they would roam. I straddled my Harley and homeward did steer, My heart was a pounding inside me with fear. 3rd. Verse: As I arrived there my wife at the door, She thought she’d never see me any more. I said to my darling, come and let’s go. We have our baby to think of you know. 4th. Verse: The goannas were leaving the fowls had all fled. The old cat was leaving our little homestead. And as we were going burning candle bark fell Lighting behind us and in front as well. 5th. Verse: With God’s help we landed, to the river so grand, And into the water we strolled hand in hand.
